Today is April 20, 2026, marking the official arrival of the Grain Rain solar term. This is the last solar term of spring, signifying the end of cold waves, a faster rise in temperature, and a significant increase in rainfall. Following Grain Rain, the May Day holiday is just around the corner, a perfect time to stay home and binge-watch TV shows.
For viewers in China, opening a video app allows them to watch popular variety shows and TV dramas, but it's a headache for overseas students and Chinese people—why is it so difficult to watch popular programs like "Riding the Wind 2026" and "Wife's Romantic Travel 2026" when they are abroad?
Many overseas users have encountered this: when opening Mango TV, Tencent Video, or iQiyi, they receive a message saying "This content is only available for playback in mainland China," or even after finally managing to play the content, it buffers so badly that it makes them question their existence. This is especially true during peak periods when popular programs are being updated, as server pressure is high and overseas connections are more prone to problems.
Why are overseas users restricted from watching domestic video platforms?
Regional copyright restrictions are the main reason.
Most domestic video platforms' content copyrights only cover mainland China. These platforms identify users' locations via IP addresses, and restrict playback once an overseas IP is detected. This isn't a technical issue, but rather a geographical restriction imposed by copyright agreements.
Network routing detours exacerbate lag
Even if some content is not subject to copyright restrictions, overseas users still need to traverse long distances to access domestic servers. Data passes through multiple carrier nodes, resulting in severe congestion during peak hours, high latency, and high packet loss rates, leading to slow video loading and frequent buffering.
Traffic surge during May Day holiday
The May Day holiday is a peak period for binge-watching, leading to a surge in domestic user traffic and putting immense pressure on servers. Overseas users have lower connection priority and are more prone to issues such as buffering and disconnections.
How do overseas Chinese solve the problem of binge-watching TV series?
The answer is simple: use a return-to-China accelerator.
QuickFox is a network tool designed for overseas Chinese and international students to access domestic networks. It allows users to connect to domestic network nodes with one click, enabling them to access domestic video platforms smoothly.
